Sudanese Refugee Association in South Africa (SRASA)
SRASA is a not for profit organization and does not discriminate on any grounds. It was founded in the year 2000 by Sudanese refugees in the Republic of South Africa as conflicts in Sudan were rising in all corners of the country. The government of Sudan has been in conflict with the southern Sudanese since May 1983, with the Darfurians in western Sudan since February 2003, as well as the eastern Sudanese. Due to these wars between government and rebel factions over the past few decades, a number of refugees have been displaced to as far as southern Africa and have to face the reality of new cultures, traditions, living conditions and environment that they have never imagined.
Objectives:
- To raise awareness of the effect that the wars in Sudan have had on the Sudanese people over the past 50 years;
- To lobby for political settlement to all the political conflicts in Sudan, particularly by involving the international community, including the UN, AU, EU, etc.;
- To fight xenophobia and racism, which are major problems facing refugees in the Republic of South Africa;
- To ensure that Sudanese refugees are legally recognized and issued asylum or refugee status and protection by the government of the Republic of South Africa;
- To work closely with the South African Lawyers for Human Rights and to ensure that the rights of Sudanese refugees are provided for under human rights legislation;
- To maintain partnerships with other organizations involved in the protection of Sudanese refugees or refugees in general in the southern African region;
- To provide assistance to Sudanese refugees to cover their basic needs (e.g. shelter, food, medical etc.);
- To provide HIV/AIDS counseling and information to Sudanese refugees in the Republic of South Africa;
- To provide counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder for refugees;
- To provide primary, secondary and higher education support for refugee children for the future reconstruction of the Sudan;
- To host cultural activities representing all the diverse tribes and cultures of Sudan at least once a year;
- To provide recreational activities.
