Office Africaine pour le Développement et la Coopération (OFADEC)

L’Office Africain pour le Développement et la Coopération (OFADEC) is a a non-governmental, non-profit organization. Its goal is to assist and protect victims of humanitarian crises. Since 1976, it has worked to promote human rights and the application of humanitarian principles everywhere where it intervenes.

Over the past 12 years, OFADEC has worked with refugees in the following situations:

• the management of camps,
• health and education,
• micro-projects for women,
• agricultural projects, and
• repatriation.

The refugee programs of OFADEC have been working with Mauritanian refugees in Senegal since 1989. It worked to provide food aid to 66,000 refugees between 1989 and 1995. OFADEC maintains a sanitation system which serves the needs of refugees, as well as a school system which has educated 6,000 children. Later OFADEC worked to ensure the integration of 800 refugee children into Senegalese schools. The organization has also run income generating projects setting 1,000 hectares to the production of rice and vegetables in Matam and Podor.

OFADEC has also worked with approximately 2,000 urban refugees in Senegal. OFADEC’s activities include:

• Assistance,
• Education and training,
• and health.

In addition, OFADEC has worked with refugees from Guinea-Bissau in Dakar. It worked to allow several thousand refugees to repatriate by boat and road.

All of OFADEC’s refugee programs have been carried out in collaboration with UNHCR or UMCOR, which has supported OFADEC’s income generating projects for refugees in rural areas since 1990. OFADEC is a member of International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) and the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership International (HAPI).
