Legal Resources Foundation

The Legal Resources Foundation is a non-governmental organization which was founded in 1991 during the advent of multi-partisan politics in Zambia.

The Foundation is involved in the promotion of human rights through provision of legal aid to the vulnerable. Since its inception the Foundation has been providing legal services and litigating in the matters of public interest. The Foundation has in the past years managed to establish legal advice centers in all the 9 provinces of Zambia.

The Legal Resources Foundation’s mission is to advocate for a sustainable human rights culture through out Zambia by empowering the people through education, promoting good governance and providing legal aid to the vulnerable. Their vision is to attain social justice and a sustainable human rights culture in Zambia through litigation.

To achieve its objectives, the Foundation has undertaken the following programs.

  • Legal aid and advice
  • Paralegal training
  • Establishment of legal advice centers
  • Newsletter publication
  • Outreach programs
  • Internship program (which host international interns, including law students and qualified lawyers)

The core activities of the Foundation in so far as providing legal aid are legal advice, assistance and litigation including training of paralegals, mobile clinics, legal education outreach, prison visits and newsletter publication. The LRF Newsletter is a monthly publication that cites human rights violation cases being handled by the Foundation. The organization hosts a website at address www.lrf.org.zm which could be browsed for further information about the organization and its activities.

The organization networks with local and international organizations in the area of human rights. Locally the Foundation networks with Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP), National Organizational Coordinating Committee (NGOCC), Zambia Civic Education Association (ZCEA), Young Christian Association (YWCA) and other local organizations rendering solidarity and legal backup. The LRF is a member of the Southern African Legal Assistance Network (SALAN). A regional network comprising 13 member organizations in the Southern Region and East Africa of SADCC member countries that are involved in the provision of legal aid services, called Southern African Legal Assistance Network (SALAN). The network shares legal information, conducts exchange staff programs and regional projects, and holds workshops and biannual meetings in alternate member countries.

LRF published A Reference Guide to Refugee Law and Issues in Southern Africa in 2002, working collaboratively with a number of other organizations in the region.
