Lawyers for Human Rights

Lawyers for Human Rights was founded in 1979 by activist lawyers defending those who had been arrested by the apartheid government. They are a leading watchdog monitoring the implementation of rights guaranteed by both international law and the South African Constitution. LHR aims to influence the development of human rights regionally-and internationally and to develop social and economic rights.

In 1996, LHR created a refugee program. LHR is now the largest refugee organization in South Africa. They assist refugees with access to the asylum application procedure as well as other legal issues such as promoting refugee's socio-economic rights. In addition to providing assistance in individual cases LHR undertakes broader advocacy, monitoring police abuses, fighting xenophobia and offering training to government officials.
