Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Centre, American University in Cairo

In addition to offering degree programs, the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Centre at the American University in Cairo also pursues research in refugee issues. Projects have included one on refugees in urban centers in the “South,” immigration, nationality and refugee law and policy in the Arab Middle East (the website reflects a particular focus on IDPs in Iraqi Kurdistan) and reproductive health of refugees. It runs the Refugee Legal Aid Project in conjunction with the AMERA (see separate listing).

Cairo Community Interpreters Program

The Cairo Community Interpreters Program was founded in 2003 by Mr. Daniele Calvani. After working for several months providing legal services to asylum seekers in Cairo, Mr. Calvani recognized the need for training for interpreters. Most of those whose services were used had no training, and this often created problems for both asylum seekers and interpreters.

The Program, which is affiliated with the Forced Migration Studies Program at the American University in Cairo (see separate entry) has now graduated more than 300 interpreters from its 3 month training course. The Program is now working to train interpreters working with UNHCR and IOM as well as developing a curriculum in medical interpretation.

In addition to these trainings, the Program is working to develop specialized dictionaries in target languages. The Program is also beginning to research how language adapts to the refugee context.
