Malawi Red Cross
The Malawi Red Cross was formally established in 1932 as the Nyasaland branch of the British Red Cross. The branch became the Malawi Red Cross Society on January 13, 1966. It joined the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on October 12, 1971.
Its mission is to alleviate human suffering through carrying out relief activities, improvement of quality of life and dissemination of information of the Movement's fundamental principles.
The Malawi Red Cross runs two refugeeĀ camps: Dzaleka and Luwani refugee camps in Dowa and Mwanza respectively. Currently both camps host 10,000 plus refugees and asylum seekers. Almost 10 years ago the Malawi Red Cross ran a program designed to meet the needs of nearly 1 million Mozambican refugees, which were at that time being hosted by Malawi.
