Refugee Law Project (RLP)

The Refugee Law Project (RLP) of the Faculty of Law, Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda was established in November 1999 with the mandate of ensuring that the rights of asylum seekers and refugees are protected and promoted. The Project operates as an autonomous project within the Faculty of Law at Makerere University. The RLP works towards ensuring that asylum seekers, refugees and displaced persons are, as specified under national and international law, treated with the fairness and consideration due human beings. Currently its mandate is implemented through three symbiotically related programs: a Research and Advocacy program which seeks to raise the profile and awareness of refugee law and related issues among stakeholders and civil society; a Legal Aid and Counseling Department which provides free legal advice and representation to refugees and asylum seekers; and an Education and Training Department which trains government officials, practitioners in the field and other interested parties, in human rights and refugee law and related issues. Chris Dolan is the Director of RLP.

The RLP is running the Beyond Juba project, a three-year project funded by SIDA and NORAD. The project is a joint initiative of the Refugee Law Project (RLP), Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC) and Faculty of Law, Makerere University. The project was launched in December 2007 and the website is www.beyondjuba.org.

The Refugee Law Project is a member of the African NGO Refugee Protection Network.
